5/21/08 Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine
Meningococcal Meningitis Vaccine is
again at Children's Clinic.
Meningococcal is a bacterium that can
cause rapid severe and often fatal infections. Every year in the United States,
1,400 to 2,800 people get meningococcal disease. Ten to 14 percent of people
with meningococcal disease die, and 11-19 percent of survivors have permanent
disabilities (such as mental retardation, hearing loss, and loss of limbs).
This bacterium is most notorious for
causing
meningitis in college dormitories and in high schools.
Also,
Click Here for information from the CDC about
Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV-4)
.
Until now we were only able to effective immunize college students, but now a
new vaccine, known as Menactra™, will allow us to immunize more people.
Please call The Children's Clinic
at 610-378-1722

Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
There are
more then 90 types of pneumococcal bacteria, and the
new pneumococcal
conjugate vaccine (PCV 13), with the brand
name of Prevnar, protects against
13 of them. These bacteria types
are responsible for most severe pneumococcal infections
among children. PCV 13 replaces a previous conjugate
vaccine
(PCV 7), which protects against 7 pneumococcal types and has
been in
use since 2000.
Children
ages 2 through 5 years of age as well as children six years
and older with
medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease
and severe recurrent
asthma should receive additional dose
of the new vaccine.
Ask your
physician if your child need this booster dose.
